Austrian ÖBB N Gauge Model Railway - Kato Unitrack

This freelance layout started off as an idea after I gave my father a book on Austrian ÖBB railways. He has visited Europe several times and was especially taken with Austria while he visited friends there. Although he already had a medium sized North American N Gauge layout, he also wanted a small European N Gauge alpine layout as well. We have always been impressed by the the Noch preformed model layouts and decided to purchase one of the small ones called "Colorado". This layout is sold by Noch in Europe, USA and Australia but is resold under the Kato brand name in Japan. The small size was just right for my father to create a layout that he could display and keep in the living area. He added some scenic items and Faller structures to complete the layout. We bought some Kato locos and rolling stock which were well suited to the environment. Although we were pleased with the end result, my father felt it would be better if the layout could be extended in some way.

I did some work in the AnyRail software program and came up with a extension for the Noch "Colorado" layout. It provided the room to add new track, trains and scenic items. By using some Bachmann piers leftover from earlier layouts that I was able to connect the two sections of the layout that were at different levels.. A river was added in the middle of the layout to cover the area of the join between both layouts. Bridges were added to complete the river section. I had a lot of structures and vehicles left over from my other layouts which were perfect to populate the new extension. The end result is a lot bigger than we initially imagined but well worth the effort..
